As the name of the business suggests, critical control management is Catherine's core focus — grounded in direct experience applying the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) Critical Control Management Good Practice Guideline. Much of the work completed within Rio Tinto aligned with research from the UQ Sustainable Minerals Institute, and is now embedded in the latest version of the ICMM guidance.
Catherine led the design and implementation of critical control management for high-consequence hazards at Rio Tinto, as part of a broader enterprise risk uplift program triggered by findings from the Juukan Gorge incident. That experience points to a consistent pattern across mining, metals and associated industries: critical control management for high-consequence personnel safety risk is now fairly well understood, but there's real opportunity to embed it just as consistently across other high-consequence major hazards — process safety hazards like pressure systems, as well as slopes, underground, and tailings.
